The End of a Perfect Day (Poem)

Sundown and Afterglow!
And lovely vesper star;
That seems to beckon sojourners below
On to the Land afar,
Beyond the heat and burden of the day,
Into that City blest,
Where the salt tear-drop shall be wiped away,
The tired heart rest.

Sundown and Afterglow!
And then a night of stars:
Like spirits that escaped, awhile ago,
Time's prison bars;
But near some never-closing Pearly Gate,
Whose drawbridge is the Cross,
Still in our sight, with sweet compassion wait,
To mitigate our loss.
