"God captains us but does not coddle us."
God captains us but does not coddle us,
Nor are we meant to pass our sojourn here
Seeking for ease and comfort, but are made
For higher, purer, grander life than this.
God needeth men, not babes, and he who fain
Would honor such a Father, must prepare
To meet rebuffs, to think and stand alone.
Softness ne’er yet bred heroes, and hard fare
Ne’er spoilt one in the making, so let us
Who daily cry "Our Father " ever prove
By word and deed that we belong to Him.
