Separation (Poem)

The pangs of absence court defeat,
Should they essay to flood my breast.
And yet when heart to heart is press’d,
Can our reunion be less sweet?

Such comfort in the thought I fund,
That though the yawning gulf of space
By distant leagues holds us apace.
We yet are one in inmost mind.

Could separation e’er us claim?
My spirit from your spirit tear?
Nay, Spirit-Life is everywhere:
We laugh at separation's name!
