From a Manuscript Album

Life is a highway—in places rough and hard, in others smooth and easy-going—a road which all humankind must traverse. Love, Friend ship, Truth are companions who never fail to lighten the darkest road, and make pleasant even the otherwise weary path. Without the close presence of these dear, if intangible forms, and the light of their smiling faces, the farer along life's highway must be, of all, most miserable. Yet not a few essay the road companionless—or worse; and these are they who make but little progress, be their steps few or many, the journey long or short, For only those sustained by the sweet triad of Love, Friendship, Truth may see the dawning of that true day toward which life's highway ever leads,—the rising following hard upon the setting sun, more welcome than e'en the parting guest which has lighted life's highway from the beginning to its close.
