If We Could Know (Poem)

If we could know how to assume
A cheerful face through days of woe,
To look beyond the deepest gloom,
And a submissive spirit show.

If we could know when fortune flies
And takes life's pleasures all away,
Although the darkest storms may rise,
That there would be a brighter day.

If we could know that all is right,
The good or bad which may befall,
Through sun and storm, by day or night,
A guiding hand is over all.
